First, the staff is incredibly friendly and nice. I had to go in and pay for seven different orders separately and they didn’t even bat an eye. The food was also ready in the exact time they said it would be. The cheesesteak is one of the best I’ve had in Lancaster, and I’m not even a marinara on a cheesesteak kind of guy. The meat was super flavorful and it had plenty of cheese. So many places really lack in the cheese department, but not Gus’s. The fries were a bit soggy, but let’s face it, I wasn’t there for the fries. Overall, this place is better than half the “talked about” places in Philly.

Great folks! Make you feel right at home, even on your first visit. Fries came out piping hot and delicious (they fry in peanut oil).👍 Now if you're a cheesesteak snob and you require a real Italian roll, don't even bother. You'll be disappointed. I was. It basically is an over-sized hot dog bun, as others have mentioned. But, if you have the capacity to appreciate the steak, cheese, sauce, and onions for what they are, you'll enjoy it nonetheless. I did.

My family has been going here for a very long time! We had a wonderful time with their family, cheese steaks and ham boats and the French fries are out of this world!! We live in MD and my brother lives in VA and when we travel to PA we always go there with a cooler!!!

Captain Gus’s is a breath of fresh air in a fast casual dining scene stuffed to the brim with unremarkable chain restaurants. My cheesesteak was easily the best I’ve had since moving to Lancaster 10 years ago and the staff was friendly and nice. Much like Route 66 Restaurant on the other side of town, the rundown interior may deter the uninitiated but it’s their loss.

10/27/23 How this restaurant clames to have the Best cheese steak in Lancaster is beyond me! They don't know what a good if not great cheese steak is! Captain Gus's Steak Shop is the Worst! cheese steak I have ever eaten! that is if you even what to call it a cheese steak & I don't! First off it was on a big hot dog bun strike 1 The meat is low quality strike 2 And it was flavorless strike 3 I'm Out! & will Never eat here again!

The food was edible but was missing flavor. They also did not offer a lot of add ins. Long story short, I had hair in my food, the fries were horrible and the place was not well maintained. Ketchup and mustard bottled looked like they had not been cleaned in years. I will not return, like ever. People working there also do not look like they maintain themselves

Family owned establishment with a great history with the community and kids. They have endless fish stories to tell. They treat you as a family member. Very conversationable. I work a lot of Saturdays and my coworker brought me there. We go every Saturday. Thanks Stacey!

Fries were very good and cheesesteak was bland. Tasted like meat was cooked awhile ago. Cheese and onions were sparse. Roll and sauce were good. Wondering if ordering right before they closed was a mistake. Staff was very friendly . Would try again and would ask for a fresh sandwich.

Probably the last old school Philly steak/sub shop in Lancaster. Very authentic cheese steaks and subs. Everything is made to order. The cheese steaks have the classic steak, cheese, sauce and grease flavor from. Your childhood. Captain Gus's is still that neighborhood joint you can't do without.
